Dedicating Ourselves to Action

These are profoundly sad and difficult times.  In the midst of a pandemic, the sins of racism and injustice have boiled to the surface once again.  Our hearts grieve and are sickened by the racially charged and unnecessary death of another black person.  Mr. George Floyd is the latest victim in a continuous list of people who have been needlessly killed.

A culture of racism and white supremacy, increasingly incited by political leaders, grows each day.  So do the disparities among our people, divisions in our society, and the fears of parents of color for their children’s lives.  Our fears and anger have rightly become palpable.  When will it stop?  How will it stop?

There are no simple or easy answers.  However, as followers of Jesus in the Methodist tradition, we must re-commit and dedicate ourselves to action.

  • We must resist evil in whatever form it presents itself.
  • We must admit and confess our own complicity in systems and institutions that perpetuate racism and inequality.
  • We must take a stand against all expressions of racism, white supremacy, violence, cultural and class disparity.
  • We must challenge all political leaders who flame divisions in our society for political gain.
  • We must examine ourselves and bow before God praying for transformed hearts, continually yielding to the love and justice of God as seen in Jesus.

Let us not turn away or ignore the urgency of this hour. Let us join the heavenly chorus of voices for its end.  Let us renew our commitment to follow the way of Jesus. The time is now!

Please pray with us for the family of George Floyd and the many families whose loved ones have been tragically lost.  Pray for all who are struggling to lead us towards God’s vision of love, justice, and equality.  Pray for the community of Salem, our state, nation, and our world.  May God’s grace, peace, justice, and vision for humanity come on earth as it is in heaven.

Ways to connect during this time.

  • All in-person worship services are canceled. We invite you to join us online instead on Sundays at 9 a.m. for a children’s message and at 10:00 a.m. for our community worship. All services will be shown on Open Door Churches’ YouTube account and posted on Facebook.
  • The church building is completely closed and the staff are working from home. If you need something, please email us, use our contact page, or leave a message on church phone. We will be checking messages and returning calls.

Celebrating a diversity of views!

At First United Methodist we have a great diversity of views on social, theological, and political issues and we celebrate this fact. Such diversity draws many to our fellowship and truly makes this church a gracious place. Here is a church where there is room to think and to question, to affirm faith and to listen to others, at times to argue and disagree, but always to appreciate the richness and wonderful complexity of God’s creation, especially as it is revealed in the variety of people and opinions in our congregation.

This doesn’t mean there is nothing that binds us together. Quite the contrary is true. We are a community of people who are working out our faith together and we draw on Holy Scripture, Church tradition, Christian experience, and inspired reason as our sources of authority. We are joined by our United Methodist heritage and are being shaped by our common desire to walk as disciples of Jesus Christ. There is a diversity in our church which gives space for personal faith development and encourages actions of social justice and love.
